New Song NY

What songs should I include?

Hey all! I’m making my mother a CD of songs for her birthday (she’ll be turning 46). I wasn’t around while she was growing up in the 70’s, but I’m willing to bet that some of y’all were. Any good/amazing songs I should include? I’ve already got “American Pie” and “Rocky Mountain High.” I know she loves the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but I feel like they each deserve their own CD, so I’m thinking more along the single biggest hits route. Oh, and she’s also a huge fan of worship-style Christian music, so I’ve included some early Amy Grant (“Sing your Praise to the Lord” and “I Have Decided”).
Suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

Romanian Christmas Songs

Christmas, or The Lords Birth, is a Christian commemoration day celebrated on the 25th of December (in the Gregorian calendar) or the 7th of January (in the Julian calendar) every year. It belongs to the twelve Lordly Commemorations (royal church festivals) of the Byzantine Churches, the third big commemoration after Easter and Pentecost.

In certain countries where Christians are a majority, Christmas is also a statutory holiday and it extends on the next day, the 26th of December: the second day of Christmas. For children it is known under the name of “Santa’s gifts” occasion on which everybody sings Romanian Christmas songs.

Everywhere you can find Romanian people with Christian feeling, as Christmas is one of the most important religious commemorations, and it is the Lord’s Birth Commemoration, a moment of joy, spiritual peace and silence. It represents a day of giving and receiving a lot of love and spiritual warmth. This is easily noticed in the enthusiasm of Christmas preparation.

For linguists the word “Christmas” is an odd word. Some say that it comes from Latin, “creatio”, which means creation, birth. In folklore, they say the Virgin Mary, when she was supposed to have God’s son, she wandered along with the right Josef from home to home asking for shelter. These aspects are mentioned in Romania Christmas songs.

Reaching the house of certain “Christmas”, she is taken by his wife into the stable, where she gives birth to Jesus. They also say that in the holy night of Christ’s birth, the skies opened and the Holy Spirit descended over the Son of God illuminating the gloomy stable. Therefore, Christmas is a holy commemoration that brings light in people’s hearts, fact that is mentioned in carols too.

Christmas holiday is announced through children’s habit of singing Romanian Christmas songs, from door to door, in order to inform the Birth of the Saviour. An old tradition also is “going with the icon”, performed by the local community priests with the icon of Lord’s Birth, blessing the houses and their Christians. Winter carols are sung rite texts dedicated to Christmas and New Year. Their origins are lost somewhere in the ancient times of Romanian history.

When Jesus was born, on the sky appeared the star that lead the three magic kings at the place of birth, the children, three just like the kings, go door to door singing “The star rises up…” carol, carrying a star with them. Christmas Eve starts with the “Good morning, Santa Eve!” carol and the children singing carols are well received in the adorned, beautiful homes. The children are rewarded by the hosts with fruits, cracknels, sweets and even money.

Romanian Christmas songs and carol singing habits are present at other nations too and they might date since the Romanization. For example, the Romanian carol “Scoala, gazda, din patut” is also found at other peoples. Actually, you can remember that peoples and languages were the same in Biblical times, so there could be many common cultural aspects concerning carols lyrics. These songs, sung in general by children bring us hope and joy every year at this time.

i dont understand “indie rock”?

i refer to everything shoegaze, dream pop, twee, noise, post-rock, etc collectively as indie rock. dont agree? tough. deal with it.

what is the appeal of that music? much of it is so “experimental” it defies rhythms, melodies, and harmonies. honestly most of it annoys me its so strange. i like very few bands that can be categorized in the “indie rock” scene: the format and say anything to name a couple, but even those bands typically have straightforward-sounding songs. what is the appeal of such “noise-pop/noise-rock” bands like Jesus and Mary Chain and Dinosaur Jr? what makes sonic youth so “cool”?
cat power?
the one i love is “post-rock”? how can that exist? too good for rock so youve moved beyond it? i can understand “post-punk” as the heyday of punk rock has since come and gone. what makes sigur ros so good? can you dance to this music? why is it that many people i know who like indie/art/prog/post/experimental-rock are snooty douches with strange haircuts and awkward social mannerisms that sometimes i want to punch the faces of because there is something just so irritating about them?
pavement? mercury rev? my bloody valentine? murder by death?

most of all, why do people worship radiohead? their music makes me cringe, or fall asleep.

so i grew up on punk rock and ska, really energetic, dance-able music. i know indie rock is not usually about the lyrics. why do i have such a distaste for indie rock?

these days, why is it COOL to be indie and have hair in your eyes and take pictures at weird angles with weird coloring where no one is smiling and youre wearing striped sweaters and scarves even when its 70 degrees out with your chuck taylors and tight pants and maybe you have those thick black glasses or a ratty-looking hat?

someone PLEASE explain this subculture to me.
oy, i know that “indie” means independent. but there is a specific type of music that is often associated with the term “indie rock” and it is all those subgenres of noise-rock and post-rock and prog and twee, and shoegaze and dream pop.

Do Thai students take up Christianity in order to rebel against their parents and mainstream society?

I noticed that Thailand is ~94% Buddhist and it reminded me of when I took up Buddhism in college. Then I wondered what type of options do Thai students have to rebel.

Christian Guitar Music – Learn to Play Christian Guitar

For many of us who want to learn christian guitar music, taking private lessons from a worship guitar teacher is out of our budget. This is especially true today. However, there are other options. Christian guitar music courses online can be extremely effective in helping even beginners learn how to play. Plus, they are very affordable. To effectively learn, you need to have some patience, dedication and the right course. Below are three things to look for when deciding on a worship guitar training course.

1) Find a course that will help you to understand how a guitar works. Too many courses concentrate solely on teaching you how to play the guitar without helping you to understand the ins and outs of how a guitar works. If you understand how it works better, the learning becomes much easier because you can envision what you are trying to accomplish. Starting to learn by just memorizing your finger position for certain christian guitar chords is a very hard way to learn.

2) Obviously the price is important, but also look at the warranty. Any good christian guitar lesson course will offer a strong warranty. There are many out there that don’t and you should stay far away from these. If the teacher or the creator of the course has confidence in his or her ability to effectively teach you to play your favorite christian music songs or run a worship guitar session, they should offer you a money back guarantee if they are unsuccessful.

3) There should be a specific lesson plan and help made available. No matter how good the instruction included in the course is, you will have a very hard time learning if a well mapped out lesson plan is not provided. Look also for a support system to make sure that you are not left on your own. You should have a way to get questions answered as you follow the course.

How To Be Victorious In Spiritual Warfare – Surrendering To God Leads To Victory

As a man who follows after God and seeks to serve Him, I am often attacked by the enemy in all kinds of ways. It’s not easy serving God, because you have all sorts of attacks perpetrated against you. The Bible tells us to wear the full armor of God to protect ourselves against the fiery darts of the wicked one.

At one stage I was considering giving up my walk with God and was suffering from depression and all kinds of terrible spiritual attacks, what got me through this situation was praising God, by getting involved in the praise and worship singing at my local church. Praise and worship is powerful when you release and surrender yourself to God and leave everything in His hands, raising your arms in surrender during praise and worship is really a way of giving it all up to God. When a police officer points his gun at a criminal, the criminal raises his arms to show the police officer he surrenders and gives up. When I raise my arms to God during praise and worship, I am telling God that I give up and I completely surrender myself to Him, “my life is going terrible God and I’m under all kinds of attacks, but I surrender God and I give it all to you, take me over God and take charge of my life, place the handcuffs upon me so I won’t do anything stupid anymore. You’re in charge of my life now God and I leave everything in your hands.

When we raise our hands to God during worship we are surrendering just like criminal surrenders to a cop when a gun is pointed at him. Surrendering yourself is often considered a weak act, but we are strongest in our weakness through Christ, “for when I am weak, then am I strong.”(2 Corinthians 12:10). When we surrender ourselves and raise our hands during worship, we are telling God that we are weak and we need him to lift us up.

When we lift our hands we in surrender we are humbling ourselves, and God gives grace to those who fully surrender and humble themselves, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”(1 Peter 5:5). We get the biggest and most potent measure of grace poured upon us, when we humble and surrender ourselves to God. When we raise our hands in worship and surrender it all to God, we are giving ourselves to the Lord because we are telling Him we cannot do it on our own without Him.

When Moses and the Israelites fought the Amalekites, whenever Moses raised his hands on the top of the mountain the Israelites would win the battle, but whenever Moses dropped his hands the Israelites would lose the battle. “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.”(Exodus 17:11). I read this passage in the book of Exodus and I can see myself standing on top of that mountain, and whenever I raise my hands in surrender to God during worship, I feel like I let God take over the battle and he fights for me and I become victorious. Whenever I drop my hands during worship and just treat it like a casual affair, and listen to the praise and worship music in a casual and independent way, I feel like I’m losing the battle because I haven’t surrendered to God and let him take over. Raising your hands in surrender to God during praise and worship allows you to win the battle in your life, just as Moses won the battle when he raised his hands on the Mountain.

Contemporary Christian Music Song Lyrics – Changing the Face of Christianity

In today’s fast paced society, where money is a God and the Wall Street Journal the Bible by which many people live their lives, Christianity has been pushed aside in favor of secular success. Contemporary Christian music song lyrics are reaching out to bring people back to God and change the face of Christianity as we know it.

Contemporary Christian music song lyrics and the up-tempo music that accompanies them have once again made Christianity popular. The Newsboys reached out to the cynical youth of the country through their songs Shine (“Shine, Make ’em wonder what you got, Make ’em wish that they were not, On the outside lookin’ bored”) and Breakfast in Hell (“When the toast is burned, And all the milk has turned, And Captain Crunch is waving farewell. When the big one finds you, May this song remind you, That they don’t serve breakfast in hell.”), launching them into bestselling hits among both the Christian and secular community. Artists like Amy Grant and Chelsie Boyd have seamlessly blended these song lyrics and popular musical tunes. The old and the new have begun to meld to develop a new genre of music like nothing ever seen before.

What’s the lesson in this? These lyrics are bringing Christian music out of the Renaissance and making it real for a new generation of Christians. Contemporary services and the lyrics that bring God into today rather than the past or the future have begun to inspire more teens and young adults than ever before to dedicate their hearts to God. Christians who have an enthusiasm for the Lord that couldn’t be expressed in the sedate, circumspect methods of worship that their parents practiced can now praise in the new, contemporary style.

The best part is that these lyrics are hammering it home to people that God is as relevant today as he was in the days of the Isrealites. Today’s Christians are facing a whole new set of challenges. Society’s morality has degenerated rapidly, and without something substantial to give them hope that God will be there for them they are all too likely to turn their backs on the church and find their strength and support elsewhere.

Contemporary Christian music song lyrics carry a message of strength and renewal to those whose faith has grown tired in the face of the endless buffeting of society’s criticism. They serve to remind Christians and non-Christians alike that God is everywhere, he sees everything, and with a little bit of faith he’ll be there today just like he was yesterday.

Christianity Vs Works Based Religion

Over the centuries Christianity has grown immensely in popularity. I feel that why this has come to pass is because it is the only religious doctrine that is based solely on us praying in the name of Jesus to God to ask forgiveness for our sins, and forgiveness being granted by God. In John 14:5-6 (NKJV) Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” These two passages clearly instruct each of us to ask forgiveness of our sins in Jesus name.

Our Father in Heaven knew that no matter how hard mankind tried, because of our imperfections, we would always be sinners; and sinners are not permitted to enter His kingdom in heaven. In the Old Testament we can read how mankind, in general, kept falling short of God’s commandments, and how even when led by Moses, the people had weak days and could not sustain these commandments of the Living God on a continual basis. My conception of the Old Testament and other major religions portray to me that they are works based. God bridged this gap from the works based type in one sole act. He sent forth to earth His Son for all of mankind. This is best summarized by Jesus’ disciple John in the New Testament; John 3:16 (KJV) which says, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is also reinforced by The New Testament in 1 John 2:1, 2:2 (NCV) which says, “But if anyone does sin, we have a helper in the presence of the Father—Jesus Christ, the One who is right. He is the way our sins are taken away, and not only our sins but the sins of all people.” In my mindset only the New Testament of Christianity offers mankind the only feasible alternative.

The unique posture that Jesus Christ offers mankind in the New Testament of Bible is His covenant that He made with God, and is expressed by Jesus at the Last Supper, in the New Testament in Luke 22:19, 20 (NCV). Then Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to the apostles, saying, “This is my body, which I am giving for you. Do this to remember me.” In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and said, “This cup is the new agreement that God makes with His people. This new agreement begins with my blood which is poured out for you.” From this point forward Christianity was born, and mankind truly had the way to enter heaven.

Jesus, during His crucifixion, said in Luke 23:34 (KJV), “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”. Alone, this selfless statement by Jesus, thinking only about us, in His ultimate anguish and pain of taking on all on the mankind’s sins past, present and future during the crucifixion portrays the truest love that He had for all of mankind, and set the example for His Father’s second greatest commandment, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

Worship Leading – The Joy, The Pain and The Responsibility!

When you are called to be a worship leader, there is a huge amount of joy, but this can be counterbalanced by a certain degree of pain in getting your worship leading to the point that you want it to be.

Worship leading is, in fact, about those two words; worship and leading! Sure, it helps if you play an instrument or sing well, but this is not essential when it comes to worship leading. The two main requirements are that you have a heart to worship (and many people can sing or play well, but do not really know the first thing about worship!), and that you are able to be a true leader to your band and your audience.

So, what does leading actually mean in the context of worship? We know that the Biblical definition of leading involves serving (Mark 10:45), and I believe that this is an excellent frame of reference when you consider being the leader of a worship team.

So, as the worship leader, you ought to be responsible for the overall direction and execution of the worship in your church on any given Sunday. Most often you should decide the songs, the order of the songs, the way these songs are linked together and the style of music used, as well as specialized areas of worship such as open worship or blending into communion, etc. This should be your domain, and that means that you need to take full responsibility for every decision you make, whether it works out well or poorly.

As leaders, we all want to know that in the successful worship times, where you really sense the Lord’s presence and power, we had a huge part in it. But when things go wrong, when the worship is tough, when the band or singers miss the mark, or the audience is bored or lost, we too have to realize that, as Franklin D Roosevelt said, “the buck stops here!”

So, worship leading involves you not only setting the direction and pace of worship, it also sees you bearing the responsibility for whatever goes right or wrong during worship. You cannot have one without the other.

Leading worship also involves leading your band and singers, dealing with the difficulties they can present, which can sometimes draw more pain than tears. YOU have to decide who is on this week. YOU have to decide what part each will play, and YOU have to tell them when they are out of line, but do this always in love!

Yet throughout all of the worship leading trials and tribulations, ultimately you mus always remember that you are in this position of worship leader to serve; to serve the Lord, to serve the Pastor and to serve both the congregation and your fellow musicians and singers. A great leader leads by serving others. A great leader leads by inspiration, not by a climate of fear and intimidation, yet as I travel the world I see gain and again worship leaders who believe that they are dictators, ruling in a climate of fear.

Worship leading is first and foremost about worship, and worship is about serving. Worship leaders, I beg you, please do not laud it over your troops with an iron fist. Be strong, but also be full of love, full of grace and full of a serving heart. Then you shall truly rise to be the worship leaders you long to be. Rules for getting married in the catholic church?

So my husband and I are both catholic and want to get married at the church that we both grew up in. It is the same church and we love it there… but does anyone know the certain rules for things such as:
Do your shoulders really need to be covered?
Can you walk down the aisle to a song with lyrics in it?
Is it okay to have your mother walk you down the aisle instead of your father? (For personal reasons, my father will not be there)
Or anything else that I need to know???
